Basics About American Cichlids
It is estimated that there are about 450 different species of cichlids in America, but only just over 300 of those species have been described. American cichlids have adapted to a wide range of different habitats and ecological niches. Not only do American cichlids come from a variety of habitats, but they come in all shapes and sizes as well, with the smallest being only 3 centimetres long while the largest grows as long as 60 centimetres.
The most well-known American cichlid is the freshwater angelfish. These fish are known for their tall, pointed fins and their beauty. Unfortunately, angelfish can be sensitive to changes in water chemistry and they may not be the best option for beginners. Oscars are another group of popular cichlids that are known for having dog-like personalities, developing bonds with their owners and even allowing them to pet them.

Differences Between African and American Cichlids
The key difference between African and South American Cichlids is that the African cichlids live in freshwaters originating from three great lakes of Africa while South American cichlids live in the freshwaters of South and Central America including the Arizona river. Moreover, looking at their behaviour, the African Cichlids are aggressive and prefer to live in isolation but, the American Cichlids are very friendly and can live with other types of fish, which makes them better suited for beginner fish keepers.
