Also known as Labyrinths, Anabantids are a family of fish who have developed a secondary breathing organ. This breathing organ is a primitive form of lung. It consists of many veins running through a patch of wrinkled skin that looks sorta like a maze from within. This organ is called a labyrinth, and, hence earned these fish the nickname 'Labyrinths.' It is because of this dual way of breathing that anabantids are able to live in really crappy, muddy water. This doesn't mean that you get out of cleaning your fish tank, though. Anabantids can live out of water indefinitely, provided the stay moist.
This group of fish come mainly from three lakes in Africa. Lake Malawi, Lake Tanganyika, and Lake Victoria
